Elodea Densa (also known as Egeria Densa) – Submerged Aquatic Plant

1 Bunch Includes: 12 Rootless, Weighted Stems (Length: 12–25 cm)

Elodea Densa is a popular, beginner-friendly aquatic plant that requires minimal upkeep. It grows quickly, especially when exposed to adequate light and a nutrient-rich water environment. However, if mineral levels are low, it will continue to grow—though its leaves may become pale or translucent, and the new growth will appear thinner.

Notable Features:

  • Natural Water Filter: This plant helps maintain water clarity by reducing harmful bacteria.

  • Water Conditions: Prefers clean water but may struggle in very soft water or poorly lit, stagnant tanks—often turning yellow and dying off.

  • Temperature Suitability: Thrives in cooler temperatures (5 – 26°C), ideal for both aquariums and outdoor ponds.

Plant Care Summary:

  • Care Level: Easy

  • Origin: Native to the Americas

  • Lighting Needs: Moderate

  • CO₂ Supplement: Optional, but encourages healthier growth

  • Growth Rate: Rapid

  • Height Range: 12 to 60+ cm

  • Recommended Placement: Background, midground, or floating

  • Optimal Water Temperature: 5 – 26°C

  • Ideal pH Range: 6.0 – 7.5

  • Leaf Color: Vibrant green

Elodea Densa is a versatile choice for aquascapes and garden ponds. To thrive, it mainly needs moderate lighting and clean water.

Note for shrimp and snail keepers:

This plant is not ideal for shrimp tanks. All egeria/elodia sold in UK is imported from Asia and treated against pests. They are all rinsed and totally safe for fish but may be harmful to shrimps and snails.

If You Decide to Use Elodea Densa in Shrimp Tanks:

  • Thoroughly Rinse: Rinse under running water to wash off any traces of treatments.

  • Test Cautiously: Introduce a single stem to the tank and watch shrimp closely. If they act abnormally or swim erratically, remove the plant and place it in dechlorinated water for 48 hours.

  • Repeat the Process: After soaking, rinse again and re-test. Only add more if the shrimp show no adverse reactions.

  • Extended Soaking: Soak the plant for at least a week, rinsing it daily to eliminate any lingering fertiliser residues.
