Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
Java Fern is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquarium plants available. Renowned for its hardiness and adaptability, this beautiful freshwater plant features long, elegant green leaves that add a natural look to any aquarium. It thrives in a wide range of water conditions and requires very little maintenance, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Unlike rooted plants, Java Fern grows from a rhizome and should be attached to driftwood, rocks, or other aquarium décor rather than buried in substrate (can also be planted in the gravel as long as the rhizome is not buried). Over time, it will naturally anchor itself and produce new plantlets from mature leaves, creating an attractive, lush display.
Bunching is ok for a week or two but it kills the plant in the long run.
Its slow growth rate and ability to thrive in low-light conditions make Java Fern an excellent choice for low-tech aquariums, shrimp tanks, community aquariums, and aquascapes.
