Echinodorus ‘Reni’ is a compact red sword plant valued for its broad leaves and rich reddish-brown, bronze and deep beetroot tones. It is one of the smaller red Echinodorus cultivars, making it suitable for the midground of larger aquariums or as a colourful focal plant in smaller planted tanks.
The plant forms an attractive rosette, typically reaching approximately 15–30 cm in height, although mature specimens can occasionally grow taller. Its rosette can spread around 15–25 cm wide, so sufficient space should be allowed around the plant.
New leaves usually emerge reddish-brown to deep beetroot in colour. Older foliage may gradually develop bronze, dark green or olive tones depending on lighting, nutrition and aquarium conditions. Although the plant is adaptable and can grow without additional CO₂, stronger lighting and good nutrition help it develop its best red colouration.
Echinodorus plants are strong root feeders. A nutrient-rich aquarium substrate or regular use of root fertiliser is recommended to support healthy growth.
In vitro small portion
This product contains the full plant contents of one small in vitro tub. In vitro aquarium plants are cultivated under controlled conditions and are supplied without the usual snails, snail eggs, algae or other common aquarium hitchhikers.
Please note that the plant will be removed from its original tub and carefully repacked for transportation. This reduces the parcel size and helps protect the plant during delivery. You will still receive the full plant contents of one small in vitro tub.

The height, growth rate, rosette habit and low basic CO₂ requirement are based on Tropica’s profile, while Dennerle lists a temperature range of 15–30°C and pH range of 5–8.
How to plant
- Carefully remove the plant from its transport packaging.
- Rinse away any remaining clear growing gel using clean water.
- Plant the roots into a suitable aquarium substrate using tweezers.
- Keep the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, just above the substrate.
- Leave sufficient space around the plant for the rosette to spread.
- Add root fertiliser when planting into plain gravel or an older substrate.
Some tissue-cultured leaves may change colour or deteriorate after planting while the plant adapts to submerged aquarium conditions. Remove badly damaged leaves while leaving the crown and healthy roots undisturbed. New submerged leaves should gradually develop under stable conditions.
For Paludarium or Terrarium, the plant must be grown in a humid environment with consistently wet substrate.
