Echinodorus bleheri (Syn: Echinodorus grisebachii ‘Bleherae’) – Emersed x 5 | 10–25 cm
Echinodorus bleheri, commonly known as the Amazon Sword, is one of the most popular aquarium plants. It can grow up to 50 cm or more in height, with leaves measuring 3–6 cm in width. Due to its size, it is best suited as a background plant in the aquarium.
A nutrient-rich substrate of at least 10 cm depth is recommended to allow the extensive root system to develop properly. When planting, ensure the roots are well covered (around 5 cm deep) to prevent the plant from floating.
This species is a heavy root feeder, so take care when positioning it near other plants, as it may compete strongly for nutrients. While additional CO₂ is not required, supplementation will encourage faster growth and more vigorous leaf production. Strong lighting is not necessary; low to medium light is sufficient.
The plant quickly shows signs of nutrient deficiencies. Yellowing or transparent leaves typically indicate a lack of nutrients, while holes in the leaves often point to macronutrient deficiencies. In such cases, adding root tabs is recommended. Since it primarily feeds through its roots, liquid fertilizers alone are generally not sufficient.
