Common Name: Crypt Pontederiifolia
Crypt Pontederiifolia is a distinctive variety of Cryptocoryne known for its long stems and arrowhead-shaped leaves. The foliage is typically light to olive green, with the underside occasionally showing a subtle pink tint. This plant can grow tall, making it an ideal choice for the midground or background of your aquarium.
When planted in a nutrient-rich aquarium substrate like Controsoil, the plant can absorb nutrients through its roots, allowing it to grow rapidly without requiring high light, CO2, or fertilizer supplements.
Cryptocoryne species can thrive in both emersed and submerged conditions. Propagation can be done by dividing the rhizome or cutting off new growth and replanting it.
Important Notes:
- Cryptocoryne plants are sensitive to being relocated once planted. Try not to disturb them once they are settled!
- Avoid making sudden changes to your aquarium setup. Unstable water conditions may cause the plant to melt or rot.
- Be sure to remove the plant from its pot, discard the cotton around the roots, and plant it in a high-quality substrate. For guidance on planting "potted" aquarium plants, click here.
Make sure to do proper research to ensure your plant thrives in its new environment.
Understanding 'Cryptocoryne Melt'
Cryptocoryne plants are sensitive to changes in water conditions. A 'Cryptocoryne melt' is a common occurrence when a plant is introduced to a new tank or experiences significant shifts in its environment, such as changes in lighting intensity, pH, GH, KH, water changes, water quality, plant relocation, temperature, or fertilization. Even established plants can undergo melting. In such cases, it's helpful to prune the affected leaves, allowing the plant to focus on producing new growth instead of maintaining the old, damaged leaves. There's no need to worry—your plant will start to recover within a month or even sooner, depending on the conditions."
