Aponogeton undulatus is a submerged, tropical aquatic plant known for its wavy, strap-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette from an ovoid rhizome. It is a moderately fast-growing plant that is relatively easy to care for, making it popular in aquariums. Its most distinctive features are the undulating margins of its translucent, pale green leaves and a unique mode of propagation where plantlets with small tubers grow on the ends of its stalks instead of flowers.
Description Leaves: Leaves are pale green, lanceolate to strap-shaped, and have a wavy or undulating margin. They have a grid-like pattern of veins and are often transparent. They grow in a rosette up to 40 cm tall.
Rhizome/Tuber: It grows from an ovoid rhizome or tuber that can be around 2 inches long and 1 inch broad.Flowers: The plant typically produces a single erect stem with white flowers.
Propagation: Propagation is often more unique than other Aponogeton species; adventitious plantlets with small tubers form on the ends of long, sometimes branched stalks instead of flower spikes. This makes it easy to multiply.
Growth: It has a moderate growth rate and does not typically require CO2 injection, although a nutrient-rich substrate is recommended. It can also have a dormant phase, but it is less common for this specific species.
Habitat and care Native range: It is native to tropical Asia, including India, and is found in lakes and ponds.
Aquarium placement: It is well-suited as a solitary plant or in a small group in the midground to background of an aquarium, especially in larger tanks of at least 100 liters. It fits well in Asian biotope aquariums.
